Merritt Harper Wright and Campbell William Wright were born on August 9, 2016. The twins were born five weeks early and stayed in the NICU for 19 days. On day 15 we received the devastating news. The newborn screening results for both boys came back positive for cystic fibrosis.
Merritt and Campbell each take 30-35 enzyme pills a day in order to absorb the nutrients in their food. The boys use a nebulizer to complete breathing treatments with Albuterol and Hypertonic Saline. Breathing treatments are paired with CPT (Chest Physical Therapy) twice a day to help keep their lungs clear. When the boys turned one they started using a vest for CPT which helps shake the mucus in their lungs, making it easier to clear. They both take a vitamin called Aquadex, which is orange liquid multi-vitamin taken with a bottle each day. Salt supplements are also used daily and they enjoy a high fat/calorie diet in order to help them gain weight. We are blessed with an amazing care team at Texas Children’s Hospital where their Pulmonary doctor keeps a close eye on the boys during their visits every three months.
